Pilates is a system of controlled movements originally devised by the German born Joseph Pilates, at the turn of the 20th Century. It is drawn from a variety of disciplines, originally named 'Contrology'. Interned during WW1, Joseph Pilates helped rehabilitate prisoners of war using his system of exercises and after his release later trained boxers and dancers in his studio in New York.

Pilates targets the deep postural muscles, building strength from the inside out, rebalancing muscles and bringing the body into correct alignment. It helps to reshape your body as new muscle recruitment patterns are developed resulting in a  longer, leaner and more toned physique. Particular emphasis is placed upon core stability and spinal mobility.

What is Pilates?

"If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; if it is completely flexible at 60, you are young." Joseph Pilates
